Vipassana is a Pali word that is usually translated as “insight meditation.” It means “seeing clearly,” and refers to a simple direct knowing.
Another term that’s often used is bare knowledge or direct knowledge. Direct knowledge arises when we are able to observe what is occurring without making associations or getting lost in our reactions to what is occurring. It a direct knowing of what’s present that doesn’t entail a lot of commentary or making up stories about the experience. It’s seeing clearly without projection and without mental chatter. In meditation practice, we seek to establish mindfulness in order to see clearly.« Back to Glossary Index
